An improved side impact protection for a passenger vehicle has a cross member (3) fitted across the inside of the passenger shell and secured to the B-columns on each side. The cross member is attached at a set height and provides better side impact protection than the conventional floor mounted cross members. Suitable adjustment is made in the positioning of the front and rear seats and the driving controls to accommodate the cross member.
