The web-fed rotary printing unit has controllable drive motors (13,14) associated with rollers (11,12) which are linked by a releasable mechanical connection provided by connecting gear wheels (15,16). The drive motor (14) of roller (12) forms master drive when mechanical drive connection between rollers is closed, in dependence on which drive motor (13) of roller (11) is controllable in the form of slave drive.
