PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce fuel consumption due to combustion by a pilot burner while maintaining followability high for starting of combustion of a main burner. SOLUTION: This combustion device 2 has the main burner 5 and the pilot burner 6. The device starts combustion by the main burner using flame of the pilot burner 6 at the starting of combustion by the main burner 5 and uses the pilot burner 6 for combustion during stopping of combustion by the main burner. The device comprises a combustion air supply quantity adjusting means 15 for adjusting the quantity of combustion air supplied to the pilot burner 6 and a fuel supply quantity adjusting means 16 for adjusting the quantity of fuel supplied to the pilot burner 6. The combustion quantity by the pilot burner 6 can be switched between pilot combustion whereby combustion is performed with relatively high heating power and standby combustion whereby combustion is performed with smaller heating power than the pilot combustion.
