PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply and safely purifying crude 6-O-methyl-erythromycin A (clarithromycin). SOLUTION: This method for purifying the 6-O-methyl-erythromycin A comprises reacting crude 6-O-methyl-erythromycin A with ammonium thiocyanate to produce the 6-O-methyl-erythromycin A thiocyanate, and then neutralizing the salt with an inorganic base such as sodium hydroxide to release the 6-O-methyl-erythromycin A as II type crystals in the alkaline medium.
