PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing anα,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid-based polymer that is readily dispersed or dissolved in water even in a high concentration. SOLUTION: In the method for producing anα,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid-based polymer by reacting anα,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid in an inert solvent in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, the method for producing anα,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid-based polymer comprises carrying out the reaction in the presence of a (meth)acrylic acid derivative represented by general formula (1) (R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; n is 1 or 2).
