<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane electrode assembly excellent in a gas diffusion property and water draining property, capable of preventing a catalyst layer from exfoliation from an electrolyte membrane, and an electrolyte membrane from damage caused by swelling and contraction of the electrolyte membrane. <P>SOLUTION: The membrane electrode assembly 3 is composed of an electrolyte membrane 6, and an anode 7 and a cathode 8 integrally jointed to the electrolyte membrane 6. Regular gaps (slits) 9 are formed on the anode 7 and the cathode 8. Stress imposed on the anode 7 and the cathode 8 can be absorbed by the gaps 9 even if the swelling and contraction of the electrolyte membrane 6 are repeated due to operation and operation stop. By the above, exfoliation of the anode 7 and the cathode 8 from the electrolyte membrane 6, and the damage of the electrolyte membrane 6 can be prevented. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
