<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the stepped electrode carrier of an O<SB>2</SB>sensor reduced in the amount to be used of expensive zirconium oxide. <P>SOLUTION: The stepped electrode carrier of the O<SB>2</SB>sensor includes the detecting carrier terminal part 4 arranged to the sensor and the detecting carrier terminal part has an anode lead 41, a cathode lead 42 and a passage 43 communicating with the atmosphere. One end of the anode lead of the carrier terminal part has the anode contact 416 exposed to the passage and can come into contact with the atmosphere and one end of the detecting carrier terminal part has the cathode contact 426 exposed from the outer wall of the detecting carrier terminal part to come into contact with a gas to be measured while the transmission carrier terminal part 5 arranged to the sensor has an anode lead 51 and a cathode lead 52. The detecting carrier terminal part is made of zirconium oxide and the transmission terminal part is made of Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, CaO or MgO.
