PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read an original document in an appropriate mode in accordance with jobs for the original document and perform rapid processing, in a network composite machine capable of reading the original document in color. SOLUTION: The network multi-function machine 100 includes an instruction accepting unit 104 for accepting a designation of processing for the original document; an original document reading unit 102 capable of reading the original document in a plurality of modes; a data generating unit 108 for generating other items of data on the basis of the data of the original document read by the unit 102; and a control unit 110 for instructing the unit 102 to read the original document in a mode for generating any one of the two kinds of data, and instructing the unit 108 to generate the other data on the basis of the one of the data, when the two kinds of data are necessary in the processing accepted by the unit 104 and if the other data can be generated on the basis of the one of the data.
