PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elastic fiber having good quality level even when knitted at a high speed and to provide a method for producing the elastic fiber. SOLUTION: The elastic fiber is obtained by making components of an elastic fiber and their ratio proper and has≤0.2 centi-newton/decitex yarn feed tension in 3.5 times draft and 50 m/min knitting rate. The method for producing the elastic fiber excellent in high-speed knitting properties comprises mixing and agitating and reacting an organic diisocyanate with a poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol and a monohydric alcohol having≥4C alkyl group so as to keep a capping ratio to a range of 1.55-1.68 to produce a capped glycol having 1.9-2.35% isocyanate content and then, reacting the reaction product with a chain extender containing ethylene diamine in a ratio of 85-95% in an organic solvent and then carrying out termination of the ends by a monoalcoholamine to provide a polyurethane polymer and fiberizing the polyurethane polymer by a dry spinning method.
