PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool combining toughness and wear resistance of the cutting tool in a high degree and suppressing particularly film chipping. SOLUTION: The surface-coated cutting tool has a base material and a coat formed on the base material. The coat forms an outermost layer on the base material and has compressive stress. The compressive stress changes to have strength distribution in the thickness direction of the coat. In the strength distribution, compressive stress is minimum on the surface of the coat, and the compressive stress continuously increases from the surface of the coat up to an intermediate position between the surface of the coat and the bottom face of the coat, has a maximum point at the intermediate point, and has a constant value from the intermediate point to the bottom face of the coat.
