PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus which is a data recording and reproducing apparatus to which a recording medium being attachable and detachable is attached and in which malfunction can be prevented. SOLUTION: Processing performed by a system control circuit realizing a DVD recorder being one mode of the data recording and reproducing apparatus comprises a step (S410) in which a command for execution of discrimination processing is detected, a step (S420) in which media information are obtained from a read-in area of a disk, a step (S 430) in which recording mode information is obtained from a data area of the disk, a step (S440) in which processing specifying a kind of the disk is performed, a step (S450) in which data for screen display is generated based on the specified data, and a step (S460) in which the data for screen display is outputted.
