PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction welding method in which a first metallic member and a second metallic member provided with an opening part are friction-welded in a state where the first metallic member is provided with a through hole, and further, even if the first metallic member and the second metallic member are made of different kinds of materials, high welding strength can be obtained, and to provide a device therefor. SOLUTION: A rotary tool 4 in which a hole making part 4a is provided at the center of the tip part, and which presses a first metallic member W1 while being rotated is prepared, and further, a receptacle 5 is prepared at the position opposite to the rotary tool 4. The second metallic member N1 is supported by the receptacle 5, and the first metallic member W1 and the second metallic member N1 are stacked. The rotary tool 4 is moved to the side of the receptacle 5 while being rotated, is abutted against the first metallic member W1 from the hole making part 4a, and further presses the first metallic member W1 to make a through hole W1b in the first metallic member W1. Further, the first metallic member W1 is softened with frictional heat by the rotation and pressing of the rotary tool 4 to cause a plastic flow.
