PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium suitable for high-density digital recording with excellent electromagnetic conversion property and excellent traveling property. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer containing ferromagnetic powder and binding agent on one surface of a nonmagnetic supporting body and has a back coat layer containing carbon black and binding agent on the other surface. The binding agent contained in the back coat layer consists of polyurethane and polyisocyanate, and the number of protrusions having a height of≥50 nm on the surface of the back coat layer is≤200 protrusions/265×350μm<SP>2</SP>.
