<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To damp vibration of an engine in a power train of a hybrid electric vehicle including a sub-system having an electric motor, an electric generator and a battery. <P>SOLUTION: In an engine starting event and in an engine stopping event, the engine torque is coordinated with the motor torque by use of a gear mechanism for partially regulating independent torque flow paths to the engine and the motor.
