<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for efficiently manufacturing biphenyls by catalytic oxidation dimerization of an aromatic compound, particularly an aromatic compound having a substitutent in the atmosphere in which molecular oxygen is present. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing biphenyls comprises subjecting an aromatic compound to oxidation dimerization in the atmosphere in which molecular oxygen is present by the use of a catalyst containing a copper compound in which a heteroatom-containing carbene compound is bonded to the copper. Particularly, the aromatic compound is a phthalic diester, and the catalyst containing the copper compound in which the heteroatom-containing carbene compound is bonded to the copper contains a palladium compound or a rhodium compound. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
