PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a magnetic recording medium capable of surely manufacturing the magnetic recording medium which has a recording layer of an irregular patten and has a sufficiently flat surface. SOLUTION: The continuous recording layer is worked to the irregular pattern shape and after a recording element 32A is formed as the projecting part of the irregular pattern, the body 10 to be worked is irradiated with an ion beam from a direction inclined with a direction perpendicular to its surface to remove the projection 38 near the top surface end of the element 32.
