PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vane pump both side plates of which are bent enough to maintain gaps defined between the side plates and a rotor and between the side plates and vanes in the optimum condition. SOLUTION: The vane pump comprises: a body b one side of which is closed by a cover c; a cam ring 7 built in a body bore 5 formed in the body b; a rotor 8 including a plurality of vanes 10 which can move into or out of the cam ring 7, the rotor 8 being incorporated in the cam ring 7 in such a manner that the vanes 10 can move into or out of the cam ring 7 along the inner periphery of the cam ring 7 when the rotor 8 rotates; and the side plates 6, 15 provided on both sides of the cam ring 7, the back faces of the side plates 6, 15 undergoing high pressure. In the vane pump, the outer diameters of both the side plates 6, 15 are set to be larger than the inner diameter of the cam ring 7. On the other hand, the outer diameters of high-pressure areas 13, 26 arranged on the back faces of both the side plates 6, 15 which undergo the high pressure, are set to be equal to or smaller than the inner diameter of the cam ring 7.
