An illuminator in a vehicle interior comprising a monitor (1) fixed to the ceiling of the vehicle interior, a means (2) for detecting open/close state of the monitor, and a monitor controller (3) for distinguishing between video display mode and illumination mode based on the detection output from the monitor open/close detection means and controlling operation of the monitor based on the distinguishing results to illuminate the vehicle interior with the light from the monitor in the illumination mode.
