<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat pump type water heater capable of effectively utilizing the hot water of medium temperature of a formed intermediate layer area, and preventing lowering of the hot water storage quantity. <P>SOLUTION: This water heater comprises a first hot water storage tank 3a and a second hot water storage tank 3b, and a bottom part of the first hot water storage tank 3a and a top part of the second hot water storage tank 3b are connected through a connection pipe 26. A medium temperature hot water taking-out port 28 is formed on the bottom part of the first hot water storage tank 3a, and a medium temperature hot water taking-out port 29 is formed on the top of the second hot water storage tank 3b.
