A method for controlling an IC engine has the optimum throttle valve (19) setting determined from the engine speed etc.. The control system monitors the cam (14) setting for the cylinder valves (11), e.g. the inlet valves, and controls the throttle valve settings in relation to programmed characteristics for the different cam and throttle valve settings in order to provide a smooth torque change between cam changes. The control system also takes into account inertia of the air mass in the inlet system.
