A heating or cooling apparatus 1 has a base 3 for supporting the apparatus 1 on the ground (e.g. a patio), a column 5 extending upwardly from the base 3 greater than the average height of a seated person, cooling means at the top of the column 5 for cooling adjacent air and a fan 27 for directing the cooled air downwards and/or laterally into the area surrounding the column 5. A housing 7 forming a canopy at the top of the column 5 contains the cooling means, and may comprise an upper conical section 9 and a coaxial lower frustoconical section 11. The cooling means may comprise an evaporator 25 or cooling coil and a coaxial refrigeration condenser 21 and fan 23. The cooling means may be reversible to provide heating, controlled by an ambient temperature thermostat. The lower housing section 11 can have controllable inlet and outlets louvers or grills 29, 31 for the passage of ambient air into the housing 7 and the passage of cooled air out of the housing 7. The upper housing section 9 may also have controllable. The column 5 can be hollow to contain piping and electrical wiring. The base 3 may house a refrigeration compressor or storage for a cooling fluid for the cooling means, a condensate tank 33 and a drain 35. An electric heater, misting unit, and/or a remote control for the apparatus may be provided. |
