摘要 A parallel-series hybrid vehicle has a torque generator 16, in the form of an internal combustion engine, connected to one element (planet carrier 26) of planetary gearing 20 and a generator 50 (which may also act as a motor) connected through a controlled slipping clutch 82 to another gear element (sun 24). Output from a further gearing element (ring gear 22) drives the wheels though gears 28, 30, 32, 34. An electric motor 46 is supplied by a battery 12 also provides drive for the vehicle. The engine output shaft 18 has a one-way brake 53 to provide reaction in electric drive mode and the generator has a controllable brake 55 for parallel drive mode reaction in the planetary gearing. Control of the slipping clutch 82 allows the engine 16 to operate above stall speed if the electro-mechanical power flow path is disabled and the brake 55 engaged following a loss of voltage from the battery 12.
