A surface cleaning apparatus comprises a fluid dispensing system having a fluid supply tank and a dispenser for supplying the fluid to the surface to be cleaned; a fluid recovery tank; a suction nozzle and vacuum source; and a vapour generator in communication with a source of liquid, and a vapour dispenser for dispensing a heated vapour to the surface to be cleaned. The liquid is preferably water and the vapour steam. A controlling arrangement is provided for selecting between the liquid and vapour modes of operation, and this arrangement preferably also controls an agitator motor which maybe provided to work in the cleaning fluid. Also claimed is an apparatus with a fluid dispensing system as above, a recovery tank; a suction nozzle and vacuum source therefor; a heating element for heating a portion of the cleaning fluid; a movably mounted agitator and an agitator motor; a power source for the apparatus and; a controller between the power source, the agitator motor and the heating element to control power to these items. Further claimed is a method for cleaning a surface comprising the steps of; heating the surface to be cleaned; thereafter, applying a cleaning fluid to the heated surface; and recovering soiled cleaning fluid from the surface. |
