It is intended to provide a novel agent for preventing and ameliorating constipation which can very effectively ameliorate constipation symptoms without any side effects. Namely, an agent for preventing and ameliorating constipation containing a water-containing gel of a polyvalent metal alginate which is in the form of spherical or cocoon-shaped particles having a minor diameter of from 1 to 10 mm and an aspect ratio (major diameter/minor diameter) of from 1 to 2.5. This water- containing gel of a polyvalent metal alginate is obtained by dropping an aqueous solution of sodium alginate into an aqueous solution of a polyvalent metal salt. If needed, it is preserved in water and/or a hydrogel compound of a natural compound having a free acid group which can be captured after reacting with a basic compound.
