The process involves heating a material layer (3) at a temperature (T1) permitting its hot forming and being greater than minimal temperature (T2) of transfer of motif inks. The layer is formed by hot forming while plating a motif carrying support (2) against the aspect side of the layer. A decorated unit is separated from the support, after the complete transfer of the inks on the layer and cooling of the decorated unit. The material layer and the motif carrying support (2) are placed between a punch and a form matrix. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle equipment item.
