PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a record reproduction device for an optical disk and a disk determination method for the record reproduction device for the optical disk which can determine kinds of the disks with different base material thickness quickly and accurately in terms of variations in each of the record reproduction devices for the optical disk. SOLUTION: The record reproduction device for the optical disk determines the kinds of two or more kinds of the optical disks with the different base material thickness by comparing, in focal search to an optical disk 301, a drive value when a focal point is detected to reach a recording surface or the drive value during focusing ON with a threshold. The device is equipped with a threshold determination means 319 for determining the threshold based on the drive value during focusing ON when one or more kinds of the disks become reproducible among two or more kinds of the disks with the different base material thickness.
