PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform format processing of a user-friendly recording medium. SOLUTION: By detecting the capacity of the recording medium, and also detecting a fragment of the recording medium, recommendable types of format processing against other format processing types are displayed with recommendation, depending on the detected capacity and an extent of the detected fragment size. The apparatus is configured so that any format processing type is selected among the above format types, and that the format processing is performed according to the above selected format processing type.
