The transmission unit (1) for a motor vehicle has a number of wheelsets forming a number of step-up stages, and final output mechanisms (10) on at least one of which an action can be carried selectively by means of a first (22) or a second main operating element (24). With identical drive directions, especially rotational sense, this main operating element of the final output mechanism, depending upon the main operating element acting upon this final output mechanism, is moved in one of two different and especially opposite directions. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) an operating device for the operating of final output mechanisms of a transmission; and (B) a method for the electronically controlled means for reference positioning of an operating unit (12) of a transmission unit.
