<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a high quality image even in a diffraction grating type light bulb writing system by improving a light source control method. <P>SOLUTION: There is disclosed a copying machine 100 that forms an image by visualizing an electrostatic latent image formed on a photosensitive drum 71. The copying machine 100 comprises a light source device 63, a diffraction grating type light bulb 65 for modulating a light emitted from the light source device 63 according to manuscript image data DIN in a line, an optical means 66 for imaging a zero-dimensional diffraction light modulated by the diffraction grating type light bulb 65 on the photosensitive drum 71, and a control means 15 for controlling the light source device 63 and the diffraction grating type light bulb 65. The control means 15 controls the light source device 63 according to an image region signal Sv for regulating a writing region of the manuscript image data DIN.
