PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system capable of improving the control responsiveness of an operation characteristic of an intake valve after starting, while improving engine startability. SOLUTION: A control mechanism 9 rotatably controls a control shaft 19 by reciprocally rotating a vane member 32 by selectively supplying and discharging hydraulic pressure forcibly fed from an oil pump 24 to first and second operation chambers 30 and 31, and controls a valve lift quantity of the intake valve in response to an engine operation state. When starting an engine, while rotatably holding the vane member in advance in a large lift side intermediate position by spring force of a coil spring 42 of an energizing mechanism 36, after starting, a plunger 41 is retreated and moved in a sliding hole 40 by the vane member, and this retreat position is held by a holding mechanism 37, to thereby avoid the influence of energizing force of the coil spring on the vane member.
