PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely re-start an engine by stopping a piston at an appropriate position at the time of engine automatic stop with a simple structure. SOLUTION: Timing of last compression top dead center of each cylinder at the time of engine stop is grasped based on engine speed and stroke of each cylinder. After the last top dead center is passed in each cylinder 12A-13D at the time of automatic engine stop, a variable valve timing system is controlled to open a port of the cylinder 12C which is in a compression stroke at the time of stop.
