PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyvinyl acetal porous material having high moisture retention and a low shrinkage rate on drying. SOLUTION: The porous material is produced by acetalizing a mixture of (A) a polyvinyl alcohol type resin of a degree of saponification of≥60 mol% and (B) a partially saponified vinyl ester type resin having a degree of saponification of lower than 60 mol% and meeting the condition: ln(y) larger than 0.042x+1.0, where x, mol%, is the degree of saponification and y,°C, is the clouding point of the 30 wt.% aqueous solution.
