PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper softener capable of yielding flexibly bendable and highly water-absorbing paper. SOLUTION: The paper softener comprises a quaternary ammonium salt(a) and an amide compound(b). In this softener, the amide compound(b) is obtained by reaction between a 10-24C carboxylic acid and a specific polyalkylene polyamine or alkyl polyamine, and optionally is in the form of a salt, and the mass ratio of the quaternary ammonium salt(a) to the amide compound(b) is (1:30) to (50:1).
