PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus and an image forming apparatus which enable an operator to easily and comprehensively recognize the set input/output format before starting a reading operation. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display part 13 is arranged opposite to a glass plate 12 for placing an original, and reading information and printing information on the original, that is, abutting position information on the original, read original size information 62 and recording medium size information, etc., are displayed on the display part 13, then, the operator can surely recognize the original reading position and the size and position of the recording medium to be outputted, etc., then, even when performing complicated input/output such as scaling and translation in every direction, the operator can surely place the original on the glass plate 12, and a copying operation without being accompanied by the erroneous output can be performed, and the high operability can be maintained.
