DRAIN AND FLOOD WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM AND ASSOCIATED METHODS

A wastewater treatment system includes at least one fluidized bed reactor (11-14) containing media (20) to which biofilms are attached. The vessel has an inlet (15) and outlet (16) adjacent to the bottom and an overflow outlet (18) adjacent to the top. Wastewater is admitted into the bottom of the vessel and contacted with the media. The Wastewater is agitated to scour some of the biofilm, then additional wastewater is added to overflow the vessel and remove some of the biofilm. The vessel is then drained to aerate the media surface, and then refilled. The fill and drain cycles effect nitrification and denitrification of the wastewater.
