METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR VOLUME-REDUCING SURPLUS SLUDGE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for volume-reducing surplus sludge, by each of which surplus sludge can be volume-reduced efficiently without deteriorating the quality of treated water even when chlorine dioxide is used as a solubilizing agent.

SOLUTION: This apparatus 14 for volume-reducing surplus sludge is composed of a solubilization tank 36 with an agitator for solubilizing surplus sludge by chlorine dioxide and an automatic injection controlling mechanism 38 for injecting the chlorine dioxide of 0.01-0.02 g per 1 g dry surplus sludge into the solubilization tank 36. The automatic injection controlling mechanism 38 is constituted so that the oxidation-reduction potential of the surplus sludge in the solubilization tank 36 is measured with time by an oxidation-reduction potentiometer (an ORP meter) 56 and the measured value of the oxidation-reduction potential is sent to a controlling means 46. The controlling means 46 controls the injection amount of chlorine dioxide by adjusting the opening degree of an automatic valve 54 on an injection pipeline 52 extended from an injection unit 48 so that the measured value is within 500-600 mV.
