On each of the variable display portions 21 to 25 in the slot machine 1 , when the symbols are stopped and displayed, at first the symbols are displayed in the state shown in the uppermost display example of FIG. 1 , thereafter the symbol "A" is displayed instead of the symbol "WILD" stopped and displayed on the pay line as shown in the second display example of FIG. 1 . Further, thereafter, as shown in the third display example, the symbol "J" is displayed instead of the symbol "A". Thereafter, as shown in the lowermost display example of FIG. 1 , the symbol "WILD" is displayed instead of the symbol "J", thereby the symbols are returned to the state when first stopped and displayed.
