The safety mechanism for e.g. a bending press comprises a laser system mounted on the ram (10) so that the beams (L1, L3, L4) are below it. The machine is stopped if a beam is interrupted. Stops (21) on either side of the workpiece (13) prevent the machine from being stopped when it interrupts a beam, allowing some play between the ram and workpiece.
