PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus at a low cost that does not place a limit on other operations during an image transfer operation even when a built-in storage means has only a small capacity and to provide a method thereof. SOLUTION: A read device 101 reads an image of an original and stores obtained image data to a built-in RAM 111. A data conversion section 104 encodes the image data to produce encoded data and stores the encoded data to the RAM 111 when no removable extension memory 201 is loaded to the image processing apparatus. When the extension memory 201 is loaded, the encoded data are stored in the extension memory 201 to reserve free areas of the RAM 111. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
