PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an anthracene compound which comes to a raw material for high ultraviolet absorptivity polymers and additives and a raw material for nonhalogen, nonphosphorus flame retardant polymers and additives. SOLUTION: 9,10-Bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)anthracene is obtained by reacting 9,10-anthrahydroquinone with ethylene oxide in the presence of an alkaline compound. Particularly, this manufacturing method uses an alkali metal salt aqueous solution of 9,10-anthrahydroquinone as a reaction raw material. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
