PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device realizing optimum start-up characteristics related to a light output, while restraining radiation noise of a light-emitting tube. SOLUTION: In a transient power control until a discharge lamp containing little or no mercury reaches a stable lighting state, a variationΔVL, from an initial value related to a lamp voltage, is detected. Then, from the moment when the volume of variationΔVL goes beyond a preset threshold value, a second control part 12 is provided for changing a time change rate of power inputted in the discharge lamp at a transition period in accordance with rise of theΔVL or elapse of time.
