PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an auto tensioner for automatically and properly holding the tension of a belt of a belt drive mechanism while preventing abnormal noises of a friction plate and improving the life of the friction plate by preventing water, oil or foreign matters from entering from the outside of the auto tensioner to the friction plate. SOLUTION: The auto tensioner comprises a fixed member 1 having a shaft portion 1a, a turning member 2 turnably and externally fitted onto the shaft portion 1a and having a pulley 2b over which the belt T is applied in a travelling manner, a front plate 13 for preventing the come-off of the turning member 2, and a thrust washer 14 held between the turning member 2 and the front plate 13. The front plate 13 with its outer peripheral shape larger than the outer peripheral shape of the thrust washer 14 is mounted on the shaft portion 1a in the viewing direction of its axial center to cover the thrust washer 14. A labyrinth L is formed between the front plate 13 and the turning member 2 at a position outside of the outer peripheral edge of the thrust washer 14. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
