PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and inexpensive method for treating cyanide-containing waste water without generating the sludge derived from a treating chemical. SOLUTION: A cyanide contained in cyanide-containing waste water is decreased by adding an oxidizing agent to cyanide-containing waste water to react the oxidizing agent with the cyanide and consecutively adding formaldehyde and a reducing agent to the reacted cyanide-containing waste water. At least one selected from the group consisting of sodium hypochlorite, sodium hypobromite, hydrogen peroxide, calcium hypochlorite and chlorinated isocyanuric acid is preferably used as the oxidizing agent.
