<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication system which can guarantee that a user is present in front of a device. <P>SOLUTION: When a user depresses a button provided on a printing apparatus (S101), the printing apparatus creates authentication information (S103) and displays it on an operation panel (S105). The authentication information includes address information on authentication servers and use permission information. The user photographs the displayed information using a camera of his/her cellular phone (S107) and acquires address information on an authentication server to transmit data to the authentication server (S109). If the authentication server confirms that the cellular phone, which transmitted the data, has been registered (S111), it transmits use permission information to the printing apparatus.
