<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device capable of generating a high-quality composite image in picking up a plurality of images and synthesizing the images. <P>SOLUTION: The image pickup device can photograph at a high-speed frame rate higher than a frame rate for displaying a motion image. In flash photographing by this image pickup device, the frame rate is set at a high-speed frame rate to consecutively photograph three images, i.e. an image (a), an image (b) and an image (c) in which the light-emitting amount of a flash is sequentially increased. Then, upper regions GP7-9 of the image (a) having an appropriate exposure level and central regions GP4-6 of the image (b) and upper regions GP1-3 of the image (c) are extracted and the extracted regions are composited into a composite image.
