PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve efficiency in transmission in data communication, by reducing the impact of impulse response on line. SOLUTION: In an ADSL modem device of a terminal unit (ATU-R) installed in a house or the like, the size exceeding the length of a cyclic prefix (CP) out of impulse response in a communication line is calculated (ST705) on the basis of the specific signal, which is exchanged before data communication. According to the size that exceeds the cyclic prefix, the length (point number) of one symbol at the data communication is selected (ST706), and the selected length of one symbol is informed to the opposite-side ADSL modem device (ST707). By using the length of one symbol, which has been informed to the opposite-side ADSL modem device, data communication is carried out with the opposite-side ADSL modem device (ST708).
