PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the deflection in the shaft direction of a belt stretching and laying member and the creep deformation thereof so as to form a uniform stable fixing nip all over the area in the shaft direction. SOLUTION: The fixing device is equipped with a thermal fixing roll 1, a pressure roll 2 pressed against the thermal fixing roll 1, a heat resistant belt 3 wound round the outer periphery of the pressure roll 2 and moving while it is held between the thermal fixing roll 1 and the pressure roll 2, and the belt stretching and laying member 4 for stretching and laying the heat resistant belt 3, and fixes an unfixed toner image formed on sheet material S. An elastic supporting member 5 is disposed between the pressure roll 2 and the belt stretching and laying member 4, and a plurality of springs 6 are disposed in the shaft direction between the belt stretching and laying member 4 and the elastic supporting member 5.
