PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve printing accuracy by measuring correctly spacing between labels. SOLUTION: Sensor output is obtained by driving labels. When sensor output changes from monotone increasing to monotone decreasing in a measuring window the sensor output forms a unimodal characteristic. If the sensor output at this time is larger than a reference level, it is recognized as a unimodal characteristic in the label spacing. A central point in the measuring window becomes to the maximum point of unimodal characteristic when the level relation between the newest sensor output and the oldest sensor output in the measuring window is reversed. The sensor outputs at the end face same line number away from this maximum point taking as the center are utilized as information at the back-end face of labels on one hand and as information at the leading end face on the other hand. Only sensor output corresponding to the label spacing is detected surely. Thus, independently of differences in transmissivity, size of labels, dispersion of label spacings and the like, the label spacing is detected correctly to enhance printing accuracy.
