Braking system for a vehicle with at least a hydraulic motor, supplied by a close circuit with a variable capacity pump. The braking system comprises both friction braking and hydrostatic braking systems. Braking command means are configured to command friction braking, hydrostatic braking and or a combination of the two according to the detected braking situation, i.e. if an emergency citation exists and dependent on vehicle speed. If an urgent braking situation occurs, the brake control means command an urgent reduction in the flow rate of hydraulic fluid circulated by the pump and gradually increasing of the hydrostatic braking force.
