PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an autofocus electronic camera capable of surely obtaining a work effect by an auxiliary automatic focusing means. SOLUTION: A controller 1 is constituted of a CPU etc. to perform various arithmetic operation and sequence control of the camera. A zoom lens driving apparatus 3, a zoom lens position detecting apparatus 4, a focus lens driving apparatus 5, a focus lens position detecting apparatus 6, an imaging apparatus 7, a photometry apparatus 8, a range-finding apparatus 10, an auxiliary light source 11, a release switch 12, a photographing mode selection switch 13 and a power supply switch 14 are connected to the controller 1. The photographing lens 2 is used as the photographing optical system of the electronic camera, and the lens 2 includes the focus lens 21 and the zoom lens 22. A range corresponding to a focusing area (f) on a photographic picture frame (center part of photographic picture frame) is irradiated with AF auxiliary light from the apparatus 11 . In the controller 1, contrast information is obtained from an image signal corresponding to the focusing area (f) (center part of photographic picture frame) when the AF auxiliary light is emitted, and then, focusing is performed.
